TWAIL for outer space: Space Law negotiations at the UN 1958-63

Markus Gunneflo

Description:
Markus will speak about work-in-progress on the first phase of development of international space law between 1958 and 1963. In the existing literature, this process, and the legal principles that was its result, is almost exclusively seen through a cold war lens, focusing on the two spacefaring nations at the time: the Soviet Union and the United States. However, such a framing ignores the efforts of Third World diplomats and jurists in trying to create a legal regime that would prohibit space from becoming an exclusive arena for the wealthy, powerful and technologically able. These actors saw space law as an opportunity to create a more peaceful and egalitarian future on earth and the official UN records offer an excellent opportunity to understand the legal thinking underpinning this project.
