Manfred Nowak

Torture in the 21st Century

Professor Nowak is Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, Co-Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann institute of Human Rights (BIM), Secretary General at the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) and vice chair of the Management Board of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights in Vienna. Prof. Manfred Nowak is the author of more than 600 publications in the fields of constitutional, administrative and international law, human rights as well as development studies and editor or advisory board member of periodicals and series.

Professor Nowak is also the independent expert leading the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. Prior to that, he was United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture from 2004 to 2010 and UN Expert on Enforced Disappearances between 1993 and 2006. He advised the Working Group of the Commission on Human Rights drafting a Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (adopted in 2006). Between 1996 and 2003, he served as international judge at the Human Rights Chamber for Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. He has received numerous awards for his work for human rights.

“Global Law, Local Lives” is a series of presentations by distinguished international scholars. It is linked to a new a research agenda on the effects of contemporary global and regional law-making on local and national legal orders.
